Introduction to Mannerism

We started the lecture with the question-What is extreme?

Me and my partner wrote down a few ideas of what we thought was extreme e.g..

Modern society 

Different ‘extremes’ of people. Poverty and homelessness v people with too much money.

Extremes of religion and cultural differences.

Refugees fleeing from their own country as they were unable to live in a safe environment.

Body modification 

Extreme art – Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst

Extreme as a perception. 

We then focussed on work by Michaelangelo. Style in art and architecture of the 16th century, characterised by the distortion of elements of proportion and space. We also looked at how classical or idealised forms were developed by Italian Renaissance artists.
