My installation piece was inspired by the ability of colour to create illusions and visual distortions. To develop this I incorporated different fabrics into my work; allowing me to identify the most effective colour and material contrasts. I discovered that light has a significant impact as it helps to permeate the colours and fabrics, effectively making them more intense and vibrant. I am also influenced by the relationships that are formed when a pattern or shape is repeated continually. My overall aim is to create a psychedelic and saturated display for the viewer.
I feel that working in the form of textiles for my installation space has allowed me to explore the contrasts in fabrics that create foreground and background illusions. Since working with textiles last year, I have developed more of an understanding of what textures work well together. I also feel that it has led me to experiment with different surfaces, such as using fablon against cotton to reflect light and colour contradictions. I enjoy disturbing patterns with bold colours to create a sense of space through layers.
Documentation:
Complementary Colour Painting – Distancing myself from print and black and grey, this was the first time during third year that I began to experiment with abstract forms using complementary colours.
Pattern and Colour – I began to start exploring pattern and disrupting patterns with solid colour to create interesting illusions.
Patchwork Jacket I stepped out of my comfort zone an began to make pieces made from fabrics making sure I looked at contrasting materials as well as colours. This led me into developing bigger patchwork pieces.
Contrasting Surfaces Using coloured fabrics I began to experiment with what colours and what fabrics contrasted the most, making sure the patchwork is as eye-capturing and impacting as possible.
Contextualisation:
Artist Research-Yayoi Kusama After unintentionally making work involving the repetition of the circle. Kusama inspired me to create large scaled work in this way.
Artist Research-Amanda Browder When I came across Browder I was intrigued by the way patchwork could develop into such a large mass. I was also surprised at how impacting the work was due to the scale and colour.
Fashion Designer Influence-Valentino Resort 2015 I came across a fashion line that inspired my practice, Valentino Resort 2015 revolves around colour and clashing patterns. The images that were launched for this campaign interested me as I liked the way the designer used to the same background as the clothing this makes the photos hard to look at due to the colour relationships formed in both the clothing and surrounding.
Installations I looked at a range of artists who have created interesting installation spaces to inspire me when creating my own.
Artist Research-Ian Kiaer I looked at Ian Kiaer when planning my installation as I knew I wanted to do something interesting with the floor whether this was making it reflective or painting it a bold colour.
