Life drawing

In Fridays life drawing session we had to draw the room how we really saw it. We realised that we don’t see things square how things are usually perceived. We actually see things with a rounded edge due to our head shape. We then had to focus on one one object and drawing everything else as we see it whilst focussing on one thing. I focussed on the skeletons rib cage. I noticed that whilst focussing on the skeleton all the objects in the room were blurred or doubled up. I found this a very difficult process as we naturally draw things clear and move our eyes to focus on objects. I found the session interested and I feel that I will definitely look into realism drawing. For this life drawing session we looked at work by

Edward Hopper

I have decided to look at Edward Hopper’s work for the project brief ‘Inside and Outside.’ Edward focuses his work on looking through buildings either through the interior or the exterior. His work is very realistic looking. Edward also uses people in his work perhaps looking out of the window or into a building. To explore his work I will paint samples in his style of photographs that I have taken of buildings and windows. I will also do sketches and charcoal pieces in his style as I have noticed he uses these materials before developing them into paintings. To find more information and pictures of his work I have taken two of his books out of the library. Vision of Reality and

Sigma Polke

After my individual tutorial I was told to perhaps take a look of artists such as ‘Sigma Polka’ as I like detailed pieces. Sigma’s work is a different style to my usual pieces as he uses a contrast of a messy distorted background surface and then detailed drawings on top. I really like the opposite effect and feel it is very effective. I feel this goes nicely with the project brief ‘Inside and Outside’ as these are contrasting works. To develop work in this style I will create different surfaces using different materials. I will also use different ways of applying paint to a canvas by using sponges and spachelors to apply paint to the backgrounds. I will then draw on top on this with fine liner pens or precise painting to highlight the contrasts.

Life Drawing

image

This was for our first life drawing session. As the weather was nice we decided to go down to the river and took a walk through the beautiful public walk way. To begin we folded the A3 page into 4 sections and discussed David Hockneys work and how he works with a grid before he starts his work. This shows how he works with perspective, in most of Davids work it is apparent that not everything in his work line up as he focusses on each part of the grid. E.g perhaps the tree trunk is slightly cut in half and shifted to one side making the trunk look slightly out of line.   We had to position our selves in different places by moving our body as we moved onto each part of the grid creating a use of different view points and working with perspective. We used charcoal to create this piece. I feel that this exercise was a very interesting way of working as it helped me to focus on what I actually saw at each point. I also feel that this was a good way to become aware with whats around you and that the eyes do not focuss on everything at one point but takes in things in a snapshot style. I will definitely be working more this way as I am very intrigued by the sense of perspection and the way David Hockney works.
